UK now has 2 major race series. The Parakart Association (PKA) and The Supercup National Series.
The PKA runs races to the European standard used for European Championships. i.e. 3 lap technical races around a mininum of 3/4 marks, usually taking less than 1 Hr to complete. They hold 3 or 4 races per day and as the format is based over the weekend, 6 races are normally completed over the 2 days.
The Supercup series originally started as a single day event of 1 x 2 Hr race,
around 2/3 marks, with the largest number of laps recorded by racers used as winning scores. Lap scorers have a bit of a head ache keeping on top of laps, buggy registration numbers, and keeping warm!
This year Graham Steel, the Supercup director has come up with a new format, that being a 2 day racing series based over the weekend. Saturday will have 2 x 40 min races for the National Cup, and Sunday will continue to be the 2 Hr Supercup.
Last year PKA and Supercup competed at the same venues on the same weekends. PKA raced on Saturday and Supercup on the Sunday. This attracted large numbers af buggy racers wishing to take part in both series, but it did limit numbers as our organisers cannot have more than 50/60 racers per race.
So this year PKA and Supercup both have a full racing calenders but the number of racers at each race will probably fall as they make a decision which series to support.
The first Supercup in Feb 19/20th and the PKA in 5/6th March.
An interesting fact, the British Buggy Club, originally set up in 1993-4 for insurance cover, has seen it's membership pass 5,000 last year. A number of the earlier members are still active, especially No:1 Mike Shaw who works for Flexifoil, No: 12 Garry Box who last weekend clocked up 100 miles in a Dawn to Dusk special in winds of 7mph and less, and your UK correspondant, that's me, has No: 79. Don't worry Cory and Dean there is plenty of linament and pain relievers to go round us old SkyDogs!!
